PS3 to secure Blu-Ray’s win over HD DVD by 2010
Analysts from Japanese firm Fuji Economics are predicting that Sony’s next-generation Blu-ray format will outsell Toshiba’s rival HD DVD format by the year 2010. Part of the reason for Blu-ray’s expected dominance is the fact that Sony’s next generation Playstation 3 console, due for release in 2006, will ship with a Blu-ray drive as standard.
Sony Blu-ray Player
Sony’s decision to support the Blu-ray format in their Playstation 3 console is expected to drive sales of Blu-ray discs, as current Blu-ray disc players are considerably more expensive than the PS3′s estimated cost of US $300 – $400, with price tags in excess of US $2000.
By contrast, support for the HD DVD format is expected to come from the computer manufacturing industry, with Fuji Economics predicting that HD DVD drives will be included in some desktop and notebook computers from 2006 onwards.
Adoption of the next-generation DVD formats among consumers, however, is expected to be a slow process. Consumers accustomed to the current generation DVD format will most likely begin the switch to Blu-ray or HD DVD in 2008, with sales of 8 million Blu-ray disc and HD DVD players predicted by 2010.
Of the 8 million players sold, Blu-ray is expected to gain market share of 4.5 million units, which would translate to revenue of approximately ¥119 billion [USD $993.5 million]. The 3.5 million HD DVD units expected to sell, on the other hand, would result in only ¥82 billion [US $684.5 million] in revenue.

Chris Said,
It will be interesting to see how many people buy a PS3 just to play Blu-Ray. Sony will be selling the PS3 at a loss. They expect to make a profit by the game software sales.
If the PS3 is far cheaper than a stand alone Blu-Ray player, I am sure all the other manufacturers will not be happy with Sony eroding the price of Blu-Ray right out of the gate.

Simon Said,
Blu-Ray discs embedded onto the PS3 is a great introduction to many gamers who are interested in spending that kind of money to consider they have bought it for multi-purposes. Those consumers who buy the PS3 to mainly use it for the Blu-Ray drive may not necessarily be costing Sony money. First of all, by the concept of “supply & demand”, many have requested for the Sony PS3 causing the price of the Blu-Ray to come to a reasonable price has sparked many others to join the bandwagon. Thus allowing the costs of these devices at a mere ratio compared to an actual Stand-alone BR-Player. Because the technology is so new, there will be several complications, one especially due to overheating the Cell chip. Sony is highly aware of this and will further introduce the next model with a sufficient cooling system to keep it from crashing. Point of the matter is, Sony has developed a “selling” scheme to push out BR compatible PlayStation to upsell its units. Whether it be for the gaming purposes or for its alternate purpose. Also including the two model option really allows the user to select one for its main purpose! Just my $0.02.
