HD DVD superior to Blu-ray, says Toshiba

In a statement released late last week, Toshiba has played down concerns over Warner Bros.’ decision to support Sony’s rival Blu-ray format, and has reiterated its belief that HD DVD is the superior format.

Blu-Ray is the future disc format for Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 3 console. In recent weeks, Blu-Ray has gained increasing support from technology companies and content providers alike.

Regarding Warner Bros.’ support for the Blu-ray format, Toshiba had the following to say:

“We recognize Warner Bros.’ participation in the Blu-ray Disc Association represents the studio’s understandable commitment to listen to a broad array of opinions and to continue to make technical evaluations of each format, and we are more than confident this will not affect timely introduction of HD DVD content to the market.”

Toshiba also argued that Hewlett-Packard’s call for Blu-ray to support the mandatory managed copy feature and include iHD support

“shows the level of technical balance achieved by the HD DVD format.”

The statement confirmed Toshiba’s commitment to the Microsoft and Intel-backed HD DVD format, with the company hoping to win the looming format war by being first to market in the US with the new format:

“HD DVD offers already-verified volume disc production and substantial superiority in terms of recordable disc cost […]

Toshiba strongly believes the HD DVD format will eventually win broad support as the more superior format, and in cooperation with our partners, we are committed to bringing HD DVD products first to market early next year in the U.S.”
